Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC)

What is Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC)?

CAC represents how much a business spends to acquire each new customer. It includes all marketing, sales, and related costs divided by the number of customers acquired.

CAC Calculation

CAC = (Total Sales + Marketing Costs) ÷ Number of New Customers

Costs include: advertising spend, marketing salaries, sales team salaries, software and tools, creative production, and agency fees.

CAC by Channel

Calculate CAC by individual channels (paid search, social media, content marketing) to identify the most cost-effective acquisition strategies.

CAC to LTV Ratio

A healthy business has a CLV:CAC ratio of 3:1 or higher, meaning a customer generates at least 3x what it cost to acquire them.

Reducing CAC

Lower CAC by improving conversion rates (getting more from existing traffic), optimizing targeting (reaching better-fit prospects), enhancing content (converting with valuable content), leveraging referrals (lower-cost acquisition), and improving retention (reducing the need for constant acquisition).

Industry Benchmarks

CAC varies widely by industry. SaaS companies typically target CAC payback periods of 12-18 months.
